After three nervous rounds of nail-biting spelling,
12-year-old Sydney was the last contestant standing
at the Lamar County Spelling Bee on Feb. 11 at
Purvis High School. Sydney, a seventh-grader at Oak
Grove Middle School, spelled "foist" to take the
first-place trophy.
"I had no idea how to spell 'foist', so I pretty
much guessed," said Sydney. "I was so happy when I
won because I realized I would get out of school for
another day for the state contest."
The Lamar County Spelling Bee was open to students
in fourth- through eighth-grades in the county's
public and private schools. Fifteen students
participated from Baxterville, Oak Grove Upper
Elementary, Oak Grove Middle, Lumberton Elementary,
Lumberton Middle and Purvis Upper Elementary
schools.
Sydney traveled to Jackson on March 9th to
compete in the state spelling bee. She competed in 7
rounds and placed 6th in the overall competition.
The word "amenable" proved too difficult to spell.
There were 31 contestants present for the state
spelling bee. The Mississippi Public Broadcasting
Network is scheduled to air the contest later in
March. We are very proud of Sydney for her
representation of OGMS and Lamar County Schools! |
